Important Warning for Bath & North East Somerset Residents
Bath & North East Somerset Council has received reports of individuals knocking on doors and falsely claiming to be from the Council. The Council has confirmed that no authorised staff are carrying out door‑to‑door visits in the area.
How to Stay Safe
• Always ask for identification. All genuine B&NES staff carry an official Council ID badge. To verify a staff member’s identity, you can call 0800 064 1704.
• Do not let anyone into your home unless you are completely certain they are legitimate.
• Report any suspicious activity to Police on 101, or 999 in an emergency.
Advice from Trading Standards
• Be cautious of unexpected doorstep callers, even if they claim to be from the Council, a utility company, or a local business.
• Take your time. Genuine staff or traders will never pressure you to make quick decisions or allow them inside.
• Never agree to work on the spot. Rogue traders often offer cheap repairs, gardening, roofing or maintenance work, then increase the price once the job has started.
• Avoid paying upfront, especially in cash. Reputable traders will provide written quotes and allow you time to compare prices.
• Keep your door closed while checking ID or making verification calls.
If you would like advice about doorstep callers, consumer rights, or concerns about a trader, you can contact Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 0808 223 1133.
